Planning the Layout

Before you touch a ladder, walk the space and decide on your anchor points — house eaves, a fence line, a pergola beam, or a freestanding pole. Measure the total distance between anchors so you can buy the right length and bulb count; most manufacturer listings give both total length and bulb spacing (commonly 12 inches apart for G40 sets), so you can calculate coverage instead of guessing.

For a patio or backyard, a crisscross or zigzag pattern between multiple anchor points generally looks more finished and gives more even light than a single straight run. If you only have two anchor points (say, house to a single tree), a gentle catenary curve with sag built in reads more natural than a taut, straight line.

Hardware for Hanging

For lighter sets over shorter spans, screw-in cup hooks or eye hooks driven into fascia boards, wood beams, or pergola posts are usually enough. Space the hooks evenly along your planned route, and always screw into solid wood or framing — not into siding, stucco, or anything that can't hold the pulled weight over time.

For spans longer than about 30 feet, or anywhere the lights will stay up permanently, use a suspension kit: a separate steel guide wire (sometimes called a catenary wire) is mounted between anchor points, and the light string is then clipped or wrapped around the wire rather than bearing its own weight. This keeps the actual bulbs and cord from stretching or sagging under wind and their own weight over time, and it's the standard approach for anything a cafe or restaurant patio would install.

Leave a small amount of intentional sag — roughly 10% of the span length — between anchor points. A perfectly taut line looks unnatural and puts more strain on the hardware; a slight, even sag distributes tension better and tends to look more like the classic patio-string look you're going for.

Powering the Run

Plan your hanging route around where the power actually is. Outdoor string lights should always plug into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet — this is required by the National Electrical Code for any outdoor receptacle, and it's what prevents a shock hazard if moisture gets into a connection. If there isn't an outdoor outlet anywhere near your planned layout, that's a job for a licensed electrician rather than a DIY fix; running a new outdoor circuit involves permitting and code requirements that go beyond hanging lights yourself.

If you need to reach a spot that's farther from the outlet than your light string's plug end, use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord rated for the wattage of your lights — never an indoor extension cord, and never a spliced or repaired cord.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Test the full string on the ground before hanging it, so you're not troubleshooting a dead bulb from a ladder.
  • Keep any string-to-string or string-to-cord connections up off the ground and, where possible, tucked under a small drip loop so water runs off the connector instead of pooling into it.
  • Turn off power at the outlet (or breaker, if it's on a switched circuit) before making or changing any connections, even low-voltage ones.
  • Recheck tension and hardware once or twice a year — wood anchors can loosen, and wind exposure adds wear over time.
Done this way, a patio string light install is a straightforward weekend project — the main things to get right are even spacing, real sag allowance, secure anchors, and a GFCI-protected power source.
