LED Strip Lighting: The Complete Buying and Installation Guide

LED strip lighting (also called LED tape light) is a flexible circuit board studded with tiny LEDs, sold on a reel with adhesive backing. It has become the go-to way to add accent, task, and ambient lighting almost anywhere: under kitchen cabinets, behind a TV or monitor, along a staircase, inside a closet, or wrapped around crown molding. Because most consumer strips run on low-voltage DC power (typically 12V or 24V) delivered by a plug-in power supply, most homeowners can install basic strip lighting themselves without touching household wiring.

How LED strip lighting works

A strip is made of LED "chips" spaced along a flexible printed circuit, covered by an adhesive backing (usually 3M-brand tape) so it can stick to clean, dry surfaces. A separate power supply (sometimes called a driver or transformer) converts your home's 120V AC current down to the strip's low-voltage DC input. Basic strips are single-color (usually warm white or cool white). Step up and you'll find:

  • CCT (tunable white) strips that shift between warm and cool white, often 2700K-6500K
  • RGB strips that mix red, green, and blue LEDs to produce millions of colors
  • RGBIC (also called RGBIC or "dream color") strips where individual LED segments can each show a different color at once, enabling chasing rainbow and gradient effects
  • RGBWW strips that add a dedicated white LED alongside RGB for cleaner whites

What to check before you buy

Sizing and specs matter more than the marketing photos. Before choosing a strip, note:

  • Run length and power supply capacity. Strips are rated in watts per foot (or per meter). Add up the total wattage of your planned run and choose a power supply rated for at least 20% more than that total — running a supply at its absolute max shortens its life.
  • Voltage. 12V strips are common for shorter runs; 24V strips experience less voltage drop (dimming toward the far end) over longer runs, so they're the better choice past roughly 16 feet on a single run.
  • LED density. More LEDs per foot generally means a smoother, less "dotty" light with fewer visible hot spots, which matters most when the strip isn't hidden behind a diffuser channel.
  • Color rendering (CRI). For kitchens, closets, and anywhere you need to judge color accurately, look for a CRI of 90 or higher.
  • IP rating for wet or outdoor locations. An uncoated strip (IP20) is for dry indoor use only. IP65 strips are silicone-coated and splash-resistant, suitable for a covered patio or a kitchen backsplash. Fully submersible outdoor or wet-location work calls for IP67/IP68-rated strips.

Installing LED strip lighting

In short: clean and dry the surface first, plan your run and connector placement before you peel any backing, mount the included aluminum channel if you're using one (it improves heat dissipation and light diffusion), and route the low-voltage cable to the power supply last.

Electrical safety note: Plug-in LED strip kits that come with a wall-mounted power adapter are low-voltage devices and don't involve household wiring. However, some professional-grade LED tape systems are designed to be hardwired directly into a junction box or connected to an existing dimmer/switch circuit. Any time a project involves opening a junction box, tying into household wiring, or replacing a wall switch, turn off power at the breaker first and confirm it's off with a non-contact voltage tester — and if you're not confident working with house wiring, hire a licensed electrician. This is also the safer route if local code requires a permit for the work, which is common for anything tied into permanent household circuits.

Common problems and fixes

  • Dim or color-shifted section at the end of a long run: usually voltage drop. Power the strip from both ends, switch to 24V, or add a mid-run power injection point.
  • Flickering: often an underpowered or incompatible dimmer. LED strips need a dimmer rated for LED/electronic low-voltage loads, not an old-style incandescent dimmer.
  • Sections going dark after cutting: a cut made off the marked line, or a connector not fully seated. Only cut at the copper cut-marks and press connectors firmly until they click.
  • Strip lifting off the surface: the adhesive doesn't bond well to textured, dusty, or cold surfaces. Clean with isopropyl alcohol and consider add-on mounting clips for anything overhead or high-heat.
Whether you're adding a subtle glow under cabinets or building a full smart-home lighting scene, matching the strip's voltage, IP rating, and CRI to the specific spot — rather than buying the cheapest reel available — is what separates a lighting upgrade that looks intentional from one that looks like a dorm-room string light.
