Installing LED Strip Lights Step by Step

Most consumer LED strip kits are designed for straightforward DIY installation because they run on low-voltage DC power from a plug-in adapter, not household wiring. Here's the general process for a typical kit.

1. Plan the run before you touch the adhesive

Measure the surface and sketch out where the strip will go, including any corners, where you'll need a connector or corner piece, and where the power supply will sit relative to the nearest outlet. Decide now whether you'll need to cut the strip to length or add an extension — most strips have marked cut lines (usually a scissor icon) every few inches, and you should only cut exactly on those marked copper pads.

2. Clean and prep the surface

The included adhesive backing bonds best to a clean, dry, smooth, room-temperature surface. Wipe the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully before sticking anything down — dust, grease, or moisture will cause the strip to lift later, often within days rather than years.

3. Mount an aluminum channel, if you're using one

For under-cabinet, staircase, or any exposed installation, an aluminum U-channel with a diffuser lens is worth the extra step. It protects the strip, spreads the light more evenly, and helps dissipate heat, which extends the LEDs' lifespan. Attach the channel with its mounting clips or screws first, then run the strip inside it.

4. Apply the strip

Starting from one end, peel back a few inches of the adhesive backing at a time and press the strip firmly into place, working in short sections rather than pulling the whole backing off at once (which makes it easy to misalign). Press along the full width of the strip, not just the center, for a secure bond.

5. Connect sections and corners

Use the included solderless clip connectors for straight joins, corner connectors for turns, and extension cables to bridge any gap where you don't want continuous LED strip (for example, jumping from a cabinet run to a separate island run). Make sure connectors are fully seated — a half-clicked connector is one of the most common causes of a strip that won't light up.

6. Connect to the power supply last

Route the low-voltage cable to the power supply, keeping it away from foot traffic and sharp edges, and plug the power supply into a standard outlet only after everything else is connected. Test the full run before doing any final cable management or hiding the wire behind trim.

7. Hardwired or line-voltage projects

Some professional LED tape systems are designed to be wired into a junction box or an existing switched circuit rather than plugged into an outlet. This is a different job entirely: turn off power at the breaker first, confirm the circuit is dead with a non-contact voltage tester, and if you're not fully confident working inside electrical boxes — or if local code requires a permit for the work — hire a licensed electrician. Never treat a hardwiring step as equivalent to the plug-in installation described above.

Common install mistakes to avoid

  • Cutting off-line instead of exactly on a marked cut point, which can damage the circuit
  • Skipping the surface cleaning step, leading to the strip peeling within days
  • Overloading a single power supply by exceeding its rated wattage across multiple strip runs
  • Using an incompatible dimmer switch not rated for LED/electronic low-voltage loads, which causes flickering
With the surface prepped and the run planned out, most LED strip installations take well under an hour for a single room.
