Walk the Property Before You Buy Fixtures

The single most useful planning step costs nothing: walk the yard after dark with a flashlight and note what actually needs light. Look for:

  • The front entry, house numbers, and any porch or portico
  • Mature trees, specimen plants, or architectural features worth highlighting
  • Steps, grade changes, and paths that are hazards in the dark
  • Water features, retaining walls, or fences with interesting texture
Sketch a rough map marking each spot and which fixture type suits it — a path light for the walkway, a spotlight or well light for a tree, a wash light for a wall.

Choose a Layering Technique for Each Focal Point

Rather than lighting everything the same way, match the technique to the feature:

  • Uplighting for trees, columns, and vertical features
  • Moonlighting (a fixture mounted high and aimed down) for dappled light under a large tree's canopy
  • Grazing for textured stone, brick, or siding
  • Silhouetting for a plant or statue in front of a lit wall
  • Path lighting, spaced 6–8 feet apart and staggered on alternating sides of a walkway

Pick a Power System

Decide between low-voltage (a transformer and 12V cable run to each fixture), solar (self-contained, no wiring, weaker and weather-dependent output), or line-voltage (full 120V, for permanent floodlights or long runs). Most residential plans lean on low-voltage for path and accent lighting, with solar reserved for spots where running cable isn't practical.

Size the Transformer and Cable

Add up the wattage of every fixture on a run and keep it under roughly 80% of the transformer's rated capacity, leaving room to add fixtures later. On cable runs longer than about 100 feet, step up to a heavier gauge (12- or 10-AWG) or use a transformer with multiple voltage taps — otherwise the fixtures farthest from the transformer will look noticeably dimmer.

Control Glare and Light Trespass

Choose shielded or hooded fixtures, aim spotlights so the beam lands on the feature rather than in anyone's eyes — including your own windows and the neighbors' — and stick to warm white (2700K–3000K) for a natural look. The Illuminating Engineering Society and dark-sky organizations both recommend fully shielded, downward-aimed fixtures as the default.

Add Automatic Controls

A photocell turns lights on at dusk automatically; pair it with a timer or smart control so lights turn off at a reasonable hour instead of running all night.

Know When to Call an Electrician

Low-voltage fixture and cable work is genuinely DIY-friendly. But the transformer needs to plug into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, and any new circuit, new outdoor outlet, or line-voltage floodlight wiring should be handled by a licensed electrician — always shut off power at the breaker first, and check local permit requirements before adding new outdoor circuits.
