Lumens vs. Watts: What Actually Matters

For most of the 20th century, shoppers used wattage as a shorthand for brightness because incandescent bulbs were all built the same way: a heated filament that produced light as a byproduct of burning electricity. A 100-watt bulb was brighter than a 60-watt bulb because it used more power to heat the same type of filament.

LED bulbs broke that shorthand. LEDs produce light far more efficiently than a heated filament, so a much lower wattage can produce the same — or more — brightness. That's why the only number that reliably tells you how bright a bulb will be is lumens, not watts.

What Lumens Measure

Lumens measure the total visible light a bulb emits. It's an objective measurement of output, independent of the technology or wattage used to produce it. The higher the lumen count, the brighter the bulb, full stop.

Common Incandescent-to-LED Comparisons

The U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR publish rough lumen equivalents to help shoppers translate old wattage habits into today's LED-dominated shelves:

  • 40-watt incandescent equivalent: about 450 lumens (roughly a 4-5 watt LED)
  • 60-watt incandescent equivalent: about 800 lumens (roughly an 8-9 watt LED)
  • 75-watt incandescent equivalent: about 1,100 lumens (roughly a 10-12 watt LED)
  • 100-watt incandescent equivalent: about 1,600 lumens (roughly a 14-17 watt LED)
Manufacturers print both numbers on the box specifically so shoppers can bridge the gap between old habits and current technology.

Where to Find This on the Package

Since 2011, the FTC has required a standardized "Lighting Facts" panel on most bulb packaging, similar to a nutrition label. It lists lumens, estimated yearly energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance (Kelvin), and wattage. When comparing two bulbs, look at that panel rather than the marketing copy on the front of the box.

Why This Matters When Shopping

If you buy by wattage alone, you risk under-lighting a room, because a cheap LED advertised as "60-watt equivalent" might genuinely hit 800 lumens, while a poorly made off-brand bulb with the same label might fall short. Checking the actual lumen figure on the Lighting Facts panel — not just the equivalent-wattage claim — is the more reliable way to judge real brightness before you buy.

Efficacy: Lumens Per Watt

For a deeper comparison between bulbs, look at efficacy, expressed as lumens per watt. A higher lumens-per-watt figure means the bulb converts more of its electricity into visible light rather than heat. Quality LEDs commonly reach 80-100+ lumens per watt, versus roughly 10-17 lumens per watt for old incandescent bulbs — a large part of why LED bulbs cost less to run even though the bulb itself costs more upfront.
