Where to Place Motion-Sensor Security Lights
Good placement matters as much as picking a good fixture — even the best sensor will underperform if it's aimed wrong or mounted somewhere motion rarely crosses its field of view.
Priority Locations
Entry doors. Front and back doors are the highest-priority spots, since they're both the most-used approach paths and the most common target points for anyone approaching the house after dark.
Driveways and garages. A motion light at the garage or along the driveway lights your path from the car to the door and makes an approaching vehicle or person visible from inside the house.
Side yards and gates. Narrow side passages between a front and back yard are classic dark spots on most properties and a common approach route that's otherwise unlit — a single fixture here closes a real gap in coverage.
Detached structures. Sheds, detached garages, and workshops away from the main house benefit from their own fixture, often solar-powered given the distance from existing wiring.
Mounting Height and Angle
For PIR sensors, mounting height and orientation affect performance more than most people expect. A height of roughly 7 to 10 feet is a good general target: high enough to cover a wide area and avoid easy tampering, low enough to keep body-heat detection effective (PIR sensitivity drops at very high mounting heights). Aim the fixture so a person's approach path crosses the sensor's field of view at an angle, rather than walking straight toward the lens — PIR sensors are more sensitive to lateral movement across zones than to head-on approach.
Avoiding False Triggers
Keep the detection zone away from tree branches, tall grass, or shrubs that move in the wind, and away from a street or sidewalk if passing cars and pedestrians cause unwanted activations. If a location can't avoid these triggers, dial down sensitivity/range on an adjustable PIR unit, or choose a dual-tech (PIR + microwave) sensor, which cross-checks two detection methods and rejects a lot of that nuisance activity. Overlapping Coverage for Larger Properties
For a long driveway or a large yard, don't stretch a single fixture past its comfortable range. Two fixtures with overlapping detection zones, or a multi-head floodlight with independently aimable lamps, gives more even coverage and fewer dead zones than relying on one unit's maximum rated distance.
