Why Bathroom Fans Must Vent Outside
A bathroom exhaust fan's entire job is to remove moisture-laden air from the room. If that air is dumped into an attic, crawlspace, or wall cavity instead of outside the building, the fan hasn't solved the moisture problem — it's just relocated it somewhere less visible and more damaging.
What "outside" actually means
The duct run from a bathroom fan must terminate at one of these points:
- A roof cap, venting straight up through the roof
- A wall cap, venting horizontally through an exterior wall
- A dedicated soffit vent designed for exhaust termination, which is different from a passive attic soffit vent used for attic ventilation
What goes wrong when a fan vents into the attic
Moist, warm bathroom air venting into a cooler attic condenses on the underside of the roof deck, on rafters, and on any insulation it touches. Over months and years, this creates conditions for mold growth and can rot roof sheathing and framing — damage that's often hidden above insulation and not discovered until it's extensive. This is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes found during home inspections and attic remodels, and it's frequently the result of a well-intentioned but incorrectly terminated fan installed during a past renovation or DIY project.
Duct material and routing matter too
Beyond just terminating outside, the duct itself should be sized correctly (commonly 4-inch round for standard 80-110 CFM fans, sometimes 6-inch for higher-capacity units), kept as short and straight as practical, and insulated where it passes through unconditioned attic space to prevent condensation from forming inside the duct itself. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct performs better than long flexible runs, which restrict airflow more and are easier to install with sagging or kinks that trap condensation.
Check for a working backdraft damper
The exterior termination point should include a backdraft damper — a small flap that opens when the fan runs and closes when it's off, preventing outside air, insects, or rain from working their way back into the duct. A damper stuck open lets in drafts and pests when the fan isn't running; one stuck closed (often from paint, dust, or debris buildup) silently blocks the fan's airflow even though the fan itself sounds like it's working normally. Checking this annually is a simple, often-overlooked piece of maintenance.
If you're not sure where your current fan vents
It's worth confirming, especially in an older home or one you didn't build yourself. From the attic, follow the ducting from the back of the fan housing to its termination point — if it simply opens into the attic space or dead-ends, it isn't properly vented and should be corrected, ideally by extending the duct to a proper roof or wall cap. This is a reasonable DIY check even if you plan to hire a professional for the correction, and it's worth doing before finishing an attic or adding blown-in insulation that would make the duct harder to reach later.
