Sizing a Bathroom Exhaust Fan
Bathroom exhaust fans are sized by CFM, which stands for cubic feet of air moved per minute. Getting this number right matters more than any other single spec, because an undersized fan will run constantly and still fail to clear moisture, while a correctly sized one clears the room efficiently on a normal cycle.
The base calculation
The standard rule of thumb, used by most fan manufacturers and referenced by the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI), is:
- 1 CFM per square foot of bathroom floor area
- A 50 CFM minimum, even if your calculated square footage would suggest less — this covers small powder rooms and half-baths
Add capacity for fixtures
The base square-footage number assumes a simple room. Add on top of it for moisture-generating fixtures:
- +50 CFM for a standard tub or shower
- +50 CFM for a jetted or soaking tub, since it holds more hot water and generates more sustained vapor
- +100 CFM for a separate enclosed toilet room, which needs its own effective ventilation even if it shares a fan with the main bathroom
Account for duct length and elbows
The CFM printed on the box is measured under ideal conditions. Every extra foot of duct run to the exterior, and every 90-degree elbow along the way, adds resistance that reduces real-world airflow below the rated number. If your duct run is long, has several bends, or uses flexible rather than rigid duct, size up from the calculated minimum rather than buying exactly to the number — a fan rated modestly higher than your calculation will actually deliver something closer to the airflow you need once installed.
When to round up rather than down
If your calculation lands between two common fan sizes, choose the larger one. An oversized fan simply runs a shorter cycle or a lower speed setting to do the same job; an undersized one runs constantly and still leaves the room humid, which is the exact problem a fan is meant to solve. For larger bathrooms, ones with an enclosed toilet room and separate tub, or spa-style layouts with a steam shower, consider whether a single higher-CFM fan or two separate fans makes more sense, and consult an HVAC contractor if you're unsure.
A quick way to check your current fan
If you already have a fan and aren't sure it's adequate, check the model number stamped on the housing or motor and look up its rated CFM and sone spec from the manufacturer, then run it through the same calculation above for your room's square footage and fixtures. If your existing fan is rated below what your room calls for, or if it clears a mirror's fog noticeably slower than it used to, that's a sign it's time to size up on replacement.
