General Installation Steps

  • Remove the old fixture. Unscrew the mounting hardware, disconnect the wire nuts, and take down the old fixture, noting which wire is which (typically black/hot, white/neutral, and bare or green/ground).
  • Install the mounting plate or canopy. Most track kits include a canopy that screws into the existing electrical box using its mounting strap or bar. Make sure it's rated to support the weight of your planned track and heads.
  • Connect the wiring. Match the kit's wires to your home's wiring — hot to hot, neutral to neutral, ground to ground — using wire nuts, following the manufacturer's included diagram exactly, since connector details vary by brand and track profile (H-track, J-track, or L-track).
  • Attach the track to the canopy. Line up the track's live-end connector with the canopy and secure it per the kit's instructions. For longer runs, connect additional track sections and any corner or T connectors before final mounting.
  • Secure the track to the ceiling. Use the included mounting clips or toggle bolts at the spacing intervals the manufacturer specifies — don't rely on the canopy connection alone to support a long run.
  • Install the track heads. Twist or clip each head into the track at your planned spacing, then aim them once power is restored.
  • Restore power and test. Turn the breaker back on, test the switch, and adjust each head's angle to confirm everything works and points where you want it.
  • Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Mismatching track profiles. If you're extending an existing run, confirm new sections and heads use the same H-track, J-track, or L-track profile as what's already installed — they are not universally interchangeable.
    • Skipping the wattage/amperage check. Especially on low-voltage or monorail systems, adding more heads than the transformer or circuit is rated for can trip breakers or damage the transformer.
    • Not supporting the full run. Long track sections need mounting clips along their length, not just at the ends, to avoid sagging or pulling loose over time.
    • Ignoring dimmer compatibility. If you're adding a dimmer switch, confirm it matches your track's voltage type (TRIAC for most line-voltage LED kits, ELV for many low-voltage transformer-fed systems) to avoid flickering.

    When to Call a Licensed Electrician
