Distance Depends on the Fixture's Output, Not a Single Rule

There's no single "correct" distance that applies to every grow light — the right hanging height depends heavily on how powerful the fixture is and how it's built. Manufacturer instructions for your specific model are the best starting point, but these general ranges hold for most common setups:

  • High-output LED panels (100 watts or more of actual draw, common in quantum-board panels from brands like Spider Farmer and Mars Hydro) are typically hung 12 to 24 inches above the plant canopy. These panels output enough intensity that placing them too close risks light or heat stress.
  • Lower-output panels and slim LED or T5 strip fixtures are usually placed 6 to 12 inches above the leaves, since their lower intensity needs the shorter distance to deliver useful PPFD to the plant.
  • Screw-in reflector grow bulbs in a standard lamp generally work best 12 to 18 inches from the plant. Their output is lower and more directional than a panel, so getting the angle and distance right matters more than with a wide, even LED array.

Start High and Adjust Down

A safe approach with any new fixture is to start near the top of its recommended range and lower it gradually over the first week or two while watching how the plant responds. This avoids shocking the plant with more intensity than it's adjusted to and lets you dial in a distance based on how the plant actually looks under your specific fixture, room temperature, and pot placement.

Signs the Light Is Too Close

Leaves that develop bleached or pale patches, curl inward, or get crispy, brown edges, especially on the top-facing leaves closest to the fixture, are common signs a light is too close or too intense for that plant at that growth stage. Raise the fixture a few inches and monitor for improvement over the following days rather than making repeated large adjustments.

Signs the Light Is Too Far or Too Weak

The opposite problem shows up differently: stems that stretch and become long and thin as they reach toward the light source (a response called etiolation), leaves that stay unusually pale or small, or generally leggy, sparse growth can indicate the fixture is too far away or underpowered for the space. Lowering the light within its rated range, or moving up to a higher-output fixture for that footprint, are the usual fixes.

Re-measure as Plants Grow

Distance isn't a one-time setting. As plants grow taller or fuller, the actual gap between the fixture and the topmost leaves shrinks even if the light hasn't moved, so it's worth rechecking clearance every couple of weeks, especially for fast-growing seedlings or young plants. Fixtures with an adjustable hanging kit or dimmer make this ongoing adjustment much easier than a fixed-mount, single-intensity light.

When Mounting Involves More Than a Hook

Simple clip-on or hook-mounted grow lights don't involve any wiring work. But if you're setting up a dedicated grow space with multiple hardwired fixtures, in-wall dimmer switches, or a new circuit to handle several high-wattage panels, turn off power at the breaker before touching any wiring and have a licensed electrician handle new circuits, switches, or permanent installations.
