Venting a Bathroom Fan Through the Roof
Why Roof Venting Works Well
Roof venting is often the shortest path outside for fans installed in upstairs bathrooms or under a single-story roof, since the duct run only has to clear the attic space rather than travel sideways through wall cavities.
What You'll Need
- Insulated flexible duct or rigid round duct sized to match the fan's outlet (commonly 4 inch)
- A roof vent cap rated for exhaust fans, with a built-in backdraft damper
- Roofing sealant and flashing appropriate to the roof material
- Foil tape or mastic for duct joints
Step 1: Confirm the Route
From inside the attic, locate the fan housing's duct outlet and pick the shortest path to a section of roof clear of rafters, vents, and skylights. Fewer bends mean better airflow and less resistance on the fan motor.
Step 2: Cut the Roof Opening
Working from the attic side (or the roof, if accessible and safe), mark and cut an opening sized to the roof cap's collar. Roof work carries real fall risk — if you're not comfortable up there, this is a good place to bring in a roofing contractor alongside your fan installer.
Step 3: Install the Roof Cap and Flash It
Set the roof cap's base flange under the shingle course above it and over the course below, following standard flashing practice so water sheds over the flange rather than pooling against it. Seal all edges with roofing sealant rated for the roof material.
Step 4: Connect and Insulate the Duct
Run duct from the fan housing to the roof cap collar, securing each joint with a mechanical clamp and sealing with foil tape or mastic, not tape alone. Because attics get cold in winter and hot in summer, insulate the duct along its full length through the attic to reduce condensation forming inside it and dripping back toward the fan.
Step 5: Slope the Duct
Pitch the duct slightly downward toward the roof termination so any moisture that does condense drains outside instead of collecting at the fan motor.
Never Terminate in the Attic
The duct must pass all the way through the roof to the vent cap outside — it should never simply dump air loose into the attic space, even behind a baffle. That moist air condenses on cold roof sheathing and framing, leading to rot and mold that can go unnoticed for years.
Test the Damper
Once installed, run the fan and confirm the roof cap's damper flaps open with airflow and closes fully when the fan shuts off — a damper stuck open lets in weather and pests, while one stuck shut blocks the fan entirely.
If the wiring for the fan needs any changes to reach this location, or you're adding a new switched circuit, have a licensed electrician handle that portion while the roof penetration is handled by whoever is comfortable and safe working at height.
