The Short Answer
For winter, set a ceiling fan to spin clockwise when viewed from underneath, and run it on its lowest speed. This is the opposite of the summer setting and produces a very different kind of airflow.
Why Clockwise on Low Speed Works in Winter
Warm air is less dense than cool air, so it naturally rises and tends to collect near the ceiling, especially in rooms with vaulted, cathedral, or unusually high ceilings. A fan spinning clockwise pulls air up through the middle of its sweep and pushes it gently outward along the ceiling, where it travels down the walls and back along the floor. Instead of a direct downdraft on the people in the room, you get slow, broad recirculation that carries some of that pooled warm air back down without a noticeable breeze.
Low speed matters here for two reasons. First, winter mode is meant to redistribute already-warm air, not create a cooling wind-chill effect — a fast clockwise fan can still feel drafty and uncomfortable in a heated room. Second, a gentle air movement is enough to disturb the layer of warm air sitting at the ceiling; you don't need strong airflow to get the benefit.
Where It Makes the Biggest Difference
The temperature gap between floor and ceiling can be several degrees in rooms with ceilings much higher than the standard 8 to 9 feet, in great rooms with open floor plans, or in homes with forced-air heating where warm air rises quickly. In a typical smaller room with a standard ceiling height, the effect is more modest, but it's still a free adjustment that can only help.
Making the Switch
Look for the small toggle switch on the motor housing, typically just below where the blades attach, or use the winter icon (often a snowflake or moon) on your fan's remote or wall control if it has one. As with any direction change, turn the fan off and wait for the blades to fully stop before flipping the switch or selecting the new mode — reversing a spinning motor adds unnecessary wear over time.
Confirming the Direction
Stand under the fan and watch the leading edge of a blade. If it appears to sweep from your left to your right as it passes overhead, the fan is set to clockwise, winter mode. You can also check by feel: winter mode should produce only a faint, indirect stir of air rather than a direct breeze straight down on you.
Managing Expectations
A ceiling fan on winter mode is a supplement to your heating system, not a replacement for it — it simply helps make the heat you're already generating feel more even throughout the room by counteracting the natural layering of warm and cool air. Used alongside a thermostat, it's a no-cost way to squeeze a little more comfort and efficiency out of a heated room, particularly one with higher-than-average ceilings.
