Why Your Ceiling Fan Stopped Working
Before assuming the motor has failed, work through the electrical basics — they account for a surprising share of "dead" ceiling fans.
Start simple
Check the breaker for the circuit, and check whether a wall switch feeding the fan has been left off. If the fan is remote-controlled, swap the batteries in the handset and confirm the receiver inside the fan canopy hasn't come unplugged — this happens more often than it should, especially after a fan has been taken down and reinstalled.
The run capacitor is the most common failure point
Most multi-speed AC ceiling fan motors rely on a run capacitor to manage the different speed settings. Capacitors degrade with age and heat, and a failing one produces a very specific symptom: the fan hums faintly but doesn't spin, or it only works on one speed (often just high) instead of three. Capacitors are inexpensive, sold by microfarad rating to match specific fan models, and are a reasonable DIY replacement once you've confirmed the breaker is off — but if you're not comfortable identifying and matching the part, this is a quick job for an electrician.
Worn switches and incompatible controls
Pull-chain switches have mechanical contacts inside that wear out after years of daily use, especially on the higher-cycle "fan speed" chain rather than the light chain. If the chain feels loose or doesn't click positively between settings, the switch itself likely needs replacing.
If the fan is run from a wall-mounted speed control, confirm it's actually rated for motor loads. A standard incandescent dimmer is not designed to control a fan motor — it can cause humming, limited speed range, or early motor failure. Fans need a control specifically listed as fan-rated (or a compatible smart/remote-based control).
Thermal protection and motor age
Many fan motors include a thermal overload protector that trips automatically if the motor overheats and resets itself once it cools — this can look like an intermittent, unexplained shutoff rather than a hard failure. If a fan is many years old (well past a decade of regular use) and none of the above resolves it, the motor itself may simply be at the end of its service life, and replacement is usually more cost-effective than motor repair.
When it's an electrician's job
A breaker that trips repeatedly when the fan is switched on, any sign of scorching or melted insulation at the wiring connections, or a warm-to-the-touch ceiling box are all signs to stop troubleshooting yourself and call a licensed electrician. Those symptoms point to a wiring fault rather than a worn part, and they're not safe to keep testing.
